The Miracle of Two Cups of Barley Tea

When I was young, our house was always noisy.

It wasn’t surprising—I had three older sisters.

Among them, my second and third sisters were like natural rivals. They argued almost every day. And their fights? They were not small.

It usually started with something simple.
“That’s mine!”
“No, I saw it first!”

But before we knew it, they were already grabbing each other’s hair, shaking back and forth, and even shouting some pretty strong words for kids. It felt like watching an action movie in our living room.

I would just stand there quietly, watching. I knew better than to get involved.

And then, every time, our mom appeared.

She never yelled. Instead, she calmly went into the kitchen and came back with two cups of cold barley tea.

“Sit down.”

That was all she said.

Like magic, my sisters stopped fighting. Just like someone pressed a pause button. They sat down, still breathing heavily, faces tense and serious—but their hands were already reaching for the tea.

My mom didn’t say anything more. She simply placed the cups in front of them.

At first, they drank angrily.
But after a few sips… something changed.

Their faces slowly softened.
The tension faded.

And then, almost unbelievably, one of them would mumble,
“Maybe I was a bit too much…”
And the other would reply,
“Well… you were.”

And just like that, they started talking again. Soon, they were laughing together—as if nothing had happened.

I always found that moment fascinating.

How could they go from such a fierce fight to laughing together, just because of a cup of cold barley tea?

To me, barley tea was never just a drink.
It was a sign of peace.

Even now, when I drink barley tea, I remember those moments—the loud fights, the intense faces, and the quiet way my mom placed the tea between them.

Sometimes I wonder…

What if all conflicts in the world could be softened with a simple cup of tea?

Maybe it’s not that simple.

But in our home, it worked like magic.
